Zipp NSW - Talking all that jazz× 13.06.2018 Maybe the word jazzy is thrown around a little too liberally around these parts, then again maybe we’re around a lot of jazz. Any way you look at it, there’s jazz and the recent release of Zipp’s NSW range of wheels has us all weak at the jazz knees.Zipp operates on a kind of level that thinks using bio-mimicry, magnets and computational fluid dynamics is a normal conversation starter. That is to say, they’re comfortable with being smarter than you. You might also say, “I don’t want to have that conversation,” but then we would say, “that’s cool, they make wheels” and that’s what we’re here for.Zipp’s NSWs are brilliant. From their ‘Nest’* in Indianapolis they’ve developed a technique for imprinting their logo that doesn’t interfere with the aerodynamics of their ‘Sawtooth’ dimpled rims – a design that “consists of 12 nodes that are specifically clocked to start aerodynamic shearing at a rate of 50hz at a rider speed of 20mph.” See what I mean? Zipp will, at any moment, just drop a sentence like that and you’re just meant to nod and go along with it.Let’s look at few other things. That rear hub or in Zipp parlance “Zipp Cognition Hubset with Axial Clutch” is where the magic happens. You see, traditional hubs work like a drum brake, the moment you coast, the friction within the ratchet mechanism starts slowing you down, but“inside the Axial Clutch mechanism [they] use magnets, rather than steel springs, to move and engage [the] light weight Metal injection Molded (MIM) ratchet rings for the most reliable and consistent operation possible. With 36 points of engagement that all interlock simultaneously, there isn't a more secure freehub mechanism on the market.”There they go again. You think we’re finished? Even the resin that is used is created exclusively for Zipp. It dissipates heat so effectively that there has never been a heat related failure with a set of their carbon clinchers. It’s like falling in love with a beautiful robot. Yes, she’s beautiful, but she’s a robot. And while we’re on the topic of sex robots, is that cheating? Finally, it all comes together in their factory in Indiana. While these guys may come across as remorseless wheel building machines, their production is far from a factory of soulless replicants. Laid up, molded, drilled and built inhouse with sexy Sapim spokes, Zipp NSW 202s and 303s are a beyond a nice set of wheels. They’re 1500 grams of Making America Great Again, except they’re actually great and you want to be seen with them. They’re smart and sexy like Karlie Kloss in a pair of glasses and as about as expensive. And just like walking down the street with Karlie Kloss, rolling your local loop will definitely turn some heads. And guess what. They’re very jazzy.*I’m still not comfortable with the NSW acronym Nest Speed Weaponry, but it is what it is. We’ll give them a pass because their really good at what they do.
