Bike Gallery - Lexus of Blackburn – Quarterly review×

By Dan Wilkins

Despite the fact we got our hands on a shiny new blinged-up Lexus CT200H from Lexus of Blackburn last year, we really count our debut season as starting on the first of January. We've already reported the JAYCO BAY CRITS but the team has been on a little rampage of racing since then, so here’s an update.

Australian Road Nationals were next up in January with Fergus Sully, Cam McDonald, Daniel Strauss, Alastair Crameri and Ken Ballhause competing.

Fergus rode strongly in the Under 23 Individual Time Trial pulling out a great result to go top 25. However, Fergus' main target was the punishing Under 23 Road Race.  After being in the main break of the day and with some of the biggest young hitters around, eventually he finished the race in a respectable 34th. Expect big things from the silver mountain goat.

The Elite Men's Road Race brought out the big hitters. Team Bike Gallery–Lexus of Blackburn, plus some other guys from GreenEdge, Lotto- Belisol, Blanco, Cannondale, Garmin-Sharp and some team called Sky. Froffing was the word of the day, and all the boys put in a fantastic effort against some of the best cyclists in the world. Nationals is famously selective; of nearly 150 starters only around 50 finished. Ken Ballhause and Cam McDonald put in a valiant effort in their first attempt at nationals. Daniel Strauss made the 200km distance to complete his first nationals, but just slipped outside the official time envelope.

Next up, the Tour Downunder.

Yeah, nah. We didn’t compete there, but a few of the boys headed over for some good times!

Leigh Clifford, our rider from Geelong pulled off a win at Eastern Garden and also got 4th at the Geelong Cycling Club Championships

Resident mountain bike legend Brett Kellett consistently performs when the going gets tough. He who pulled out a 2nd at Gravity 12 hour, 3rd at Otway Odyssey and then 4th at National XC Championships. Brett then backed this up with a win at the All Mountain Cup at Mt Buller. He also showed his dominance at the multi-stage Bike Buller, where he came 3rd overall and won all but one stage. The famous Mont 24hr MTB race was up next, and Brett's team again notched up a win, this time in the Team 40+ division.

Fergus Sully, Ken Ballhause and Matt Boys, our newest recruit, also pinned numbers for the Mt. Buller Road Race. Fergus climbed his way to 10th to earn Bike Gallery - Lexus of Blackburn its first point of the 2013 Victorian Road Series. Fergus continued on his way, showing his strong form, finishing in 9th in the Warburton Road Race hosted by the Blackburn Cycling Club.

Late in the criterium season Ken Ballhause won his first Hawthorn Crit, a famously punishing race. Ken is known for his uber-technical blog posts and is meticulous with his training data and hairstyle; great to see it paying off!

St Kilda Cycling Club (SKCC) closed off their season with the annual Club Championships. Cam McDonald, Daniel Strauss and Dan Wilkins flew the colours in  warm conditions last Sunday morning. Unfortunately we were over powered and didn’t get the result we were after... there is always next year.

This weekend we turn our heads to the Road Race season. Daniel Strauss, Cam McDonald, Dan Wilkins and Rick Horvat will be racing the "Hell of The West" , a great course with some gravel and a 1km 13% climb.

On Sunday Fergus Sully, Ken Ballhause, Matt Boys and Jules Fleurus will tackle the Mt. Baw Baw Road Race (idiots!). The boys have been training hard for this race, they’re in good condition and hopefully this run of great form and hard work pays off again!

Finally, Alistair Crameri has moved on to a newly formed National Road Serries team for the upcoming season. We wish him the best of luck.
